“Raid” to Desolation Sound, anyone?

Postby John_in_Van » Thu Feb 27, 2014 9:45 pm

Some of you may have heard of the Shipyard School Raids run out of Silva Bay on Gabriola Island, B.C., from 2005 until about 2010. They were semi-competitive cruises in company for small sailing and rowing boats: some legs were sailed, some rowed. Initially they went South to finish at the Wooden Boat Festival in Port Townsend, but the last couple of times they headed North as far as Quadra Island. I missed the chance to take part, but would like to organise something similar, albeit on a small scale. Do any members in the Pacific Northwest want to take part? I thought July would be a good time to do it. The raid itself would take about a week, so there and back would take about two. Accommodation might be mostly camping (à la Shipyard School Raid), or it might be possible to choose stops offering a bit more comfort in some places (none of us is getting any younger, after all). I am also trying to contact owners of Chebaccos and Drascombe Yawls, which are comparable in size to the CY. I reckon a fleet of between six and ten boats would be manageable. If you would be interested, or have suggestions on this score, I would be glad to hear from you.

Hi John,

Do you have a specific itinerary in mind? Specific campsites and landing spots etc?

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your post. I have researched the last couple of raids that went North and looked at various possible overnight stops or places to divert to if the weather prevented the fleet from reaching the designated destination. On that basis I have sketched out a rough itinerary, which runs as follows:

Start in Silva Bay (Gabriola Island, B.C.)

Descanso Bay/Pilot Bay (both at the North end of Gabriola Island)/Schooner Cove/Northwest Bay (both on Vancouver Island)

Jedediah Island

Cockburn Bay (Nelson Island)/Secret Cove (Sunshine Coast)/Pender Harbour (Sunshine Coast)

Westview (Sunshine Coast)

Copeland Islands/Lund/Bliss Landing (all Malaspina Peninsula)

Tenedos Bay (Desolation Sound Marine Provincial Park)/Cortes Bay (Cortes Island)/Squirrel Cove (Cortes Island)

Roscoe Bay (West Redonda Island)

Manson’s Landing (Cortes Island)/Refuge Cove (West Redonda Island)

Finish in Heriot Bay (Quadra Island).

I am talking to someone with a large powerboat to act as mothership and have heard from a previous participant who is interested in escorting the fleet to keep track of stragglers.

I hope CY owners (and other skippers with comparable boats) will let me know whether they would like to participate and what they think about the above tentative itinerary. Their views on the itinerary are likely to be coloured by whether they are comfortable with camping or would prefer stops with accommodation, which may be possible in some places but not everywhere. If the response is good I can take planning to a higher level.

Thanks again.
